STORY:

The Lagos State Government has taken prompt and decisive action by ordering the closure of the Greater Scholars International School located in the Ajah area of the state. This stern response follows the distressing incident involving the alleged defilement of a four-year-old pupil by the school’s security guard, David James, on April 27, 2023. The accused, a 23-year-old security guard, has been arraigned and remanded for the crime, appearing before Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi of Magistrate’s Court 1, Ogba, on a charge of sexual assault.

In response to the incident, the affected child’s parents appealed to the state government to hold the school accountable. Subsequently, a protest took place at the school gate, with concerned individuals, including friends, family members, and representatives from non-governmental organizations, demanding justice for the child and the immediate closure of the school.

Recent online images reveal that the Lagos State Ministry of Education has taken steps to seal the school as a response to the incident. The father of the victim expressed gratitude for the government’s swift action, stating, “This reflects the commitment of the Lagos State Government to doing what is right. We find assurance in the pursuit of justice.”

The ongoing court proceedings are scheduled to continue on September 4, 2023.

SENSES (Child Safeguarding and Protection Principle):

The S.A.F.E For Children® Community Enlightenment Board, on May 18th, 2023, reported this distressing case, underlining the necessity for Child-Focused Organizations to implement a robust Child Safeguarding and Protection System. This system should encompass a well-defined policy, detailed processes, periodic reviews, and comprehensive training for all stakeholders, including support staff. The board also highlighted the importance of stringent procedures for hiring security guards within schools.

Regrettably, the timely response from the Lagos State government came nearly four months after the alleged incident, emphasizing the need for proactive measures.

While addressing individual incidents is crucial, a comprehensive approach to the safety and security of children requires a deeper evaluation of the underlying factors. The government’s supervision, regulation, and oversight of schools within the state must be scrutinized. Rather than solely focusing on school closures, the following considerations must be addressed:
a. Assessing the potential danger to other children within the school.
b. Implementing measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
c. Establishing uniform policies and procedures for Child Safeguarding and Protection issues within the school system.

STONE (Call to action):

Child Safeguarding and Protection demand unwavering dedication and meticulous attention. We urge all Child-Focused Organizations to institute a comprehensive Child Safeguarding and Protection System, comprising a well-structured policy, detailed processes, and regular training for all stakeholders, including support staff.

Furthermore, we implore all Child-Focused Organizations to adopt robust Safer Recruitment Policies/Systems, signifying a steadfast commitment to safeguarding children under their care.

Lastly, we call upon all relevant stakeholders to ensure the comprehensive prosecution of this case, ensuring that justice is served within the confines of the law. Additionally, providing the the affected child and her parents with necessary psychosocial support to aid in her recovery from this traumatic experience is imperative.
