A few years ago, I played a crucial role as a consultant providing local content and context for an international project sponsored by the Government of Japan. The project, focused on child-focused research within a specific state in Nigeria, brought together expertise from Hong Kong and local insights. My task was to participate in focused group discussions with state government representatives, ensuring the research was grounded in local realities.

During one such discussion, I found myself countering misleading assertions by the state officials. This led to a confrontation, where an official questioned my background with the query, “Who is his father in this land?” The question starkly highlighted a societal emphasis on familial stature over individual merit.

Reflecting on this experience, I realized the significance of the legacy I am creating for my son. Against a backdrop of societal norms that often equate credibility with family name, I am committed to ensuring his achievements and character define him. I aspire for him to be known for his resilience, hard work, and values. If ever asked about his father, I hope he can proudly reference a legacy of integrity and exemplariness, independent of societal status.

This story, spanning interactions with government officials in a particular Nigerian state and international collaboration, reinforces the value of individual contributions and the importance of breaking free from the constraints of inherited reputation. It’s a testament to the impact of personal virtues over lineage in shaping one’s legacy.
