Opening Charge

‘I charge you today to be a child protector. The child needs you. He/she is already under the siege of very bizarre abuses. You can become his/her light at the end of the tunnel. You can become his/her hope in a seemingly hopeless sea of exploitation and intimidation. You can become the salt of his/her life, who will preserve his/her dignity of human person, his/her foundation of living a meaningful life. Arise, save the children and save humanity. Think the Child…Think Today…Think the Future…’

I here today with very mixed feeling. I am excited that I am here to meet with you on this page to do the work of a witness and a trustee. Again I am burdened by the level of rot in the educational system. I am burdened by the cases of child abuse, which are fast becoming the emblem of our social interaction with our children.

My excitement stems the words of Claire Boothes that ‘there are no hopeless situations, but only hopeless people.’ I see hope in the actions of men and women, who have arisen and will arise to puncture this huge racket and seemingly insurmountable regime of child abuse in our country.

It is has been my fervent belief that enlightenment is superior to enforcement. It is better for a child not to experience abuse at all than to us to embark on a journey of rehabilitation. I experienced abuse as a child and I can say with every sense of certainty and responsibility that the impact of child abuse is eternal except there is divine intervention.

Therefore understanding the horror and the nearly irreparable damage that any form of abuse have on the child, we labour to warn men and women to be conscious of the way they treat children. I am back again in the labour room of Social Empowerment Advocacy. I am about to give birth to another revolution. I want to show the custodians of the life of the African Child the 60 areas where they are agents of abuses and what they can do to avoid it. By mid-June, we should come should hit the social space with this Campaign Tool, an audio book on Child Protection in Africa.

It is the first of its kind, a field work and practical intervention to prevent child abuse.  Please, I enjoin you all to watch out for this. The battle of enlightenment must be won and it must be won now.
