Opening Charge
‘Kindly note also that I believe strongly that inspiration without knowledge will soon lead to frustration. Therefore, if I must inspire you to be the best for our children, I must load you with what I consider to be necessary knowledge of them.’
Dear friends, sure you had an INSPIRED weekend. I have many wishes to make this day, being my first time with you this week, month and quarter of the year. I thank God that they are all good wishes. First I wish you a fruitful week, a splendid month and a very brilliant quarter. I wish you God’s kind of speed, grace, mercy and wisdom in abundance to navigate this season. I can hear your loud amen. I want to assure you that the louder your amen, the greater the access you have to this invaluable wishes. Hahaha…I am Laughing Out Loud (LOL)…Some are now doubling their shout of amen…
Alright! Yes, I think, pleasantries and wishes done with, I will like to begin the journey of inspiration today by reminding you of what I discussed last week. Kindly note also that I believe strongly that inspiration without knowledge will soon lead to frustration. Therefore, if I must inspire you to be the best for our children, I must load you with what I consider to be necessary knowledge of them.
Now, you remember that I spent the better part of this page last week defining C-H-I-L-D-R-E-N, according to my understanding. I hope you found it rewarding. Today, I will begin to share with you from the perspective of the law. I believe this discussion should take us to the middle of the week. Let me assure you that you will enjoy every bit of it.
One reality that dawned on me in my early year of legal practice is that the law rules all things. I mean the law is the foundation of modern society, departure from the rule of force, and the establishment of state and the creation of government, whose primary aim is the welfare and the security of the people. It therefore goes without saying that if the law is the foundation of modern society, then genuine, enduring and accelerated development in modern society is achievable through the democratization of the knowledge of the law in every area of life of the generality of our people.
It is important to note that children (child’s) rights are Located within the framework of the legal system of a Nation. I must hasten to add that a Nation’s legal system also respects international law as no nation is an island. Join me therefore in line with the foregoing as we move to consider the National and International Legal Frameworks for the respect of the rights and responsibilities of children.
Please note that the history of child’s rights laws dated back to 1924 when the first Declaration of the Rights of the Child was adopted in Geneva. While many efforts have been made since then on the protection of the rights of the child, one significant step was the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which was adopted and opened for signature, ratification and accession by United Nations’ General Assembly resolution 44/25 of 20 November 1989. It came into force on 2 September 1990. United Nations Rights of the Child Convention is the most accepted legal document on protection of the rights of the child today, having been ratified by 195 countries of the world.
Another law that is relevant to the protection of the rights of the child is the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (1990). This particular law derives its peculiarity from the fact that it protects the rights of the African Child and makes provisions for the responsibilities of children. It was adopted in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on July 1990 and entered into force on 29 November 1999.
I will like to stop at the international scene today. Tomorrow, I will begin to deal with local laws. You can’t afford to miss this series. I urge you to join me tomorrow as we continue this journey. Do have an INSPIRED Day.
