Opening Charge

Hello dear friends and fellow custodians. I am glad you are doing well. How do I know you are doing well? I know. Not because I am aware of your state but the ONE, whose I am and whom I serve and who mandates me and gives me grace to be here daily assures me it is well with you.

He did not only assure me that it is well with you He instructs me to tell you that it is well with you. So if the Maker of the heaven and the earth says it is well with you, I think it makes business sense to take that proclamation to the bank and sit on the seat of patience and stretch forth the hands of faith until withdrawals are made. It simply means, the key to our wellness is in our hands.

I began this piece yesterday sharing my personal understanding and perspectives on the word, CHILDREN. I stopped at letter I. Permit me today to begin with letter L. Letter L represents Leadership. Children are not leaders of tomorrow. The child begins to show leadership trait from a very tender age. The truth is, the leadership part of the child’s life is not put on hold when other areas develop. Leadership is responsibility; children begin to take responsibility at very tender age. Parents either snuff out the trait or fan it into blossoming into fruition.

D speaks of delightful. The child is without guile. He is innocent, pure and therefore fun to be with. The child innocence and carriage teach us that we are created with a free spirit, partnered after the image and likeness of the Creator. I make bold to say that the child is so delightful that there is nothing he can do to make an adult angry except that such adult is already angered by other factors. Painfully, a lot of times, what children suffer from adults is simply transferred aggression.

R represents respect. In all that we do, we respect the child and take into cognizance that he is a complete human being, who deserves to be treated with respect. I am of the opinion that when a child is not respected he suffers three devastating consequences. First he does not respect himself; second he does not respect others and lastly he does not demand respect from others.

E means Engage. Erin Gruel submits that we must ‘Engage, Enlighten and Empower’ to get the best out of our children. Custodians of the minds of the child must be conscious of the fact that they have a duty to engage the children under their care. Engaging the child is a time consuming exercise that we should be ready to engage in as we act in the best interest of the child. We must be willing to communicate with our children that they can always share with us, the deepest of their thoughts and feelings and get the support needed.

N stands for Now. I affirm that child’s development is now. It cannot be postponed. Our efforts must therefore be geared towards ensuring that our children receive the NOW attention.

Having finished this exercise, The Vision Speaks Series continues next week with the definition of the word, Rights. If we are to bring to the very first burner of the private and public consciousness the rights of the African child, it is important we define the rights, same way we have defined children so that we can all be on same page.
