Hello dear young friends. I am sure you are doing great today. I am happy you are proceeding on holidays. I am aware schools will not resume until January 7, 2013. I think you have enough time to rest and refresh for school work. It is said that, ‘all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.’
Today, I want to discuss with you a very important topic: How to handle a bully. I mean how to protect yourself from a bully at home and at school. Let me start by asking, who is a bully? Does anyone have the answer? The Dictionary defines a bully as ‘an aggressive person, who intimidates or mistreats weaker people.’
Intimidation can be by beating, teasing, cursing. When you are bullied you become intimidated. A lot of times you are teased with your physical features like your nose, mouth, leg, ears and the rest. The other day I went to a leading secondary school in Lagos. I saw a female pupil crying in a corner. I moved close to her and asked her why she was crying. She said her class mates said she had k-legs. In some cases you are teased by your name, where you live, the status of your parents and the rest of it. A boy whose name was Judah was nicked named Judas by his classmates. He had to change his name to Samson.
If you understand what you just read, and depending on your age, you have either been a bully or you have been bullied before. If you have been a bully, I want to advise you to please stop being one. It is not good at all. One day you too will be bullied.
This discussion is likely to be a long one. Next I will share with you how to stop being a bully and if we still have space, I will discuss with you to protect from being bullied. Have a great week.
