In 2005, I handled my very first project for the for UNICEF. It was a sensitisation program aimed at helping stakeholders (primary and secondary caregivers, primary and secondary parents, school leaders, teachers, journalists, government functionaries and related persons) in the life of the child understand their roles under provisions of the Child Rights Act, 2003.
That project and many others that I have handled for UNICEF and related organisations would take me to the nooks and crannies of the nation meeting with people of diverse customs, cultures, orientations, persuasions, idiosyncrasies and perspectives about the child.
The more people I met the more worldviews I encountered. The real challenge is that these worldviews are not predicated on the precision of research. They have their foundation in unquestioned and uninterrogated traditional belief. Since genuine development must derive its life from research most of the worldviews, informing how we relate with our precious children is punctuated with crude backwardness. Sadly, our western education seem to have little or no impact on our worldview about the child.
So we treat children the way we see them and we see them the way we were seeing growing up.
The greatest tragedy today is that there seems not be deliberate efforts being sponsored by the government, institutions of learning, research institutes to reorientate the generality of our people about what they believe about the child, showing us the impact of our belief in the previous years and the gain of RETHINKING our belief.
The world has never been in the habit of waiting for those who choose to stay behind in matters of development. Olympic games and World Cup do not have a special standards for Third World.
Today African is in the calendar 21st Century while the First and Second Worlds are in the realities of the century.
Tomorrow, Saturday February 29, 2020 we will be opening some windows in the area of what it means to exist and raise children in the Third World in the calendar 21st century.
