5 YEAR OLD KANO PUPIL KIDNAPPED AND KILLED BY HER TEACHER
…SAFER RECRUITMENT: WE KNOW NO MAN AFTER THE FLESH

It has been widely reported that Hanifa Abubakar, a five year old child has been kidnapped and killed by her  teacher. According to Franktalk.com, ‘Hanifa was allegedly killed in Kano by her school teacher who kidnapped her after collecting a ransom of N6m. He allegedly poisononed the little girl and buried her in a shallow grave when she recognised him.’

This sad story again goes to lend credence to our #NOPROTECTIONNOSCHOOL campaign.

As usual the suspect has been arrested and he is being paraded by the police, who in spirit of Frank Mba laying claim to huge score in crime fighting. The Nigerian police has again engaged in the empty oral gymnastics of dry sermonisation, encouraging parents to watch after their precious children without telling them HOW. We cannot blame the police as they do not seem to know better. As at today the Specialised Police Unit recommended by the Child Rights Act, 2003 to strictly handle matters that relate to children is yet to be accorded any modicum of seriousness by the Nigerian police heiracy 19 years  after the Act was promulgated into law.

Most schools also do not know better that at the heart of recruitment of teachers are the principles and processes of SAFER RECRUITMENT. In fact it amounts to an unequivocal evidence of gross negligence to hire any member of the workforce of a Child Focused Organisation without employing and deploying the instrumentality of SAFER RECRUITMENT.

Yet how many Child Focused Organisations, and even school are aware of the same and it’s workings, not to talk of deploying the safe to protect the precious children under their care.

There are private homes that I know and I have worked with who would not register their precious children in a school or employ any domestic staff without embracing the principles of SAFE RECRUITMENT.

The point here is that this gruesome killing of this precious and innocent soul is completely avoidable where a Child Protection System is in force.
