‘I sought to understand the child, I am called to defend. I decided to seek this understanding because I discovered that it would be futile for me to defend or care for an entity, whose identity I do not comprehend.’
Dear friends, I am about my business. Yes my business. What is this business? The business of bringing to the very front burner of private and public consciousness, the rights and responsibilities of the African Child for due respect in the best interest of the child.
To ensure that you, who have decided to meet me here daily gets the way my mind is working, I have decided to inspire you with my perspectives on children, which have become the rich pillars of the vision I hold so dear. Today, I am going to begin to share with you what I believe to be the meaning of the CHILDREN.
I sought to understand the child, I am called to defend. I decided to seek this understanding because I discovered that it would be futile for me to defend or care for an entity, whose identity I do not comprehend. Therefore the acronymy you are about to encounter are products of meditation, research and divine revelation. They have helped my perceptions about children and I am persuaded they will help yours.
I also think the acronyms, I am about to share with you also agree with universal but uncommon principles. Here we go, C stands for care. It simply says children are here to be cared for. It follows that for us to care for them; we must learn from them and learn of them. To care for the child in real sense of the word, we must understand that a child has five basic needs, which are someone to believe, something to believe, somewhere to belong, first a family and community, something to become and lastly, the child needs his sense of freedom and responsibility affirmed.
H stands for heritage. This refers to the fact that the greatest legacy any parents or institution can leave for the society is a properly raised child. I share with you Abraham Lincoln’s profound thought that, ‘A child is a person who is going to carry on what you have started. He is going to sit where you’re sitting, and when you’re gone; attend to those things, which are important. You may adopt all the policies you please, but how they are carried out depends on him. He will assume control of your Cities, States, and Nation. He is going to move in and take over your churches, schools, universities and corporations. The fate of humanity is in his hands.’
The alphabet I in the word children stands for individuality. According to Maria Montessori, ‘life does not begin at three or whenever he enters pre-school, nursery class, kindergarten or first grade. Life begins at the moment of conception, and at that moment we were faced with a cell so microscopic that it cannot be seen with the naked eye but which hold within itself all the potentialities of the human being it is to be.’
Join me tomorrow as I continue with letter L. hope you found today inspiring. Do have yourself a dose of INSPIRED day.
