Teaching Children Responsibilities: Sharing the I’m D-SMARTTEESSTT™ Principle (3)

Opening Charge

‘The goal of the advocated value-orientation exercise will be to inculcate in the child, the values that will help him to be the kind of person that can carry out the Section 19 responsibilities.’

It is good to be here again today addressing issues that affect our children, our today and our future. The point I seek to address today, as I promised yesterday is how the custodians of the life of the child fulfil the Section 20 Mandate. I think in giving credible ventilation to the Section 20 Mandate, the focus of the custodians should be on developing the character of the children. I opine that our primary focus should not be to load the child with the responsibilities outlined in Section 19, but to help him become the kind of person, who can carry out the responsibilities. I submit that the focus of the custodians should be to embark on a value-orientation exercise for the child, exemplified by their (custodians) lives. The goal of the advocated value-orientation exercise will be to inculcate in the child, the values that will help him to be the kind of person that can carry out the Section 19 responsibilities. By the word values here, I mean principles, standards, or qualities considered worthwhile or desirable by an individual or an entity.

As I have said earlier in one of our discussions, it is important to note that the information available to a child, most importantly from our actions, determines what the child believes. His belief determines his values; his values determine his habit. In view of the foregoing, I propose the I’m D-SMARTTEESSTT™ Principle as a Template of for Teaching Children the Section 19 Responsibilities:

  • Decode Your Identity: At the root every dysfunction is lack of understanding of one’s identity. The first question every human being seeks answer is the issue of identity. One of the greatest challenges of young people is that they are finding their identity. They seek personal identity, family identity and national identity. As it is today there are no credible answers to the quests of young people to the issue of identity. A people who do not know their identity will not know their heritage. When the sense of heritage is missing, the sense of mission is the first victim.
  • Soundness:  this refers to training our child to define his priorities right and purse same. Our priorities in life are determined by our sacrifice, time & energy.
  • Make of yourself: to drum it to the child that his mind is limitless; and that ‘the happiest of people do not have the best of everything; they just make the best of everything that comes their way.’

Thank you friends, I will continue this tomorrow. Have an INSPIRED Day
