Opening Charge
‘Parenting is a calling to preserve the family and by so doing preserving humanity. The family is said to be the foundation of the society and the peace of society is determined by the peace of the family.’
I am here this day to keep my promise I made yesterday when concluding our discussion. I promised to share with you basic truth that I believe parents must know, understand and practice if we must effectively play our role as the number one regulatory in the protection of our children.
Here we go: I think for us to effectively play the role of a regulatory body as parents we must understand that the word parent is an acronym where letter P stands for pay full attention to the child. It simply means parents must be available to provide leadership to their children in thoughts, in words and indeed. Alphabet A represents, Act together in love, which is a call to the custodians of the life of the child to be united in all matters, including those that concern the children. R stands for Ready to be real and lead with your life. Another word for this is modelling, which answers to the lifestyle of the parents, predicated on articulated vision, mission and values. John X. Maxwell submits, ‘a good example is worth a thousand sermons. What you do have more impact on your child than all the lectures you could give.’
Long before John X Maxwell, Abraham Lincoln had aptly concluded, ‘there is but one way to train a child the way he should go, and that is to travel it yourself.’ E stands for Engage in empowerment, which also means mentoring. Mentoring, I believe answers to time and wisdom. Parents must engage the child, with the aim of enlightening him and ultimately empowering him to face day-to-day issues that confront him on daily basis. Mentioning, I think is a noble attempt by parents to duplicate who they are in their children through the teaching of vision and values and keeping inspiration alive. Parents, I believe are not permitted to give to the child what they have made (possession) without giving him what made them (values).
Letter N stand for Never say Never. It is called the rule against Naivety. It says parents must make conscious efforts to protect the child from abuse. They cannot afford to be naïve or gullible about the state of affairs of the times. Letter T means Turn to God. The admonition here is that parents must be conscious of the fact that it takes the grace and the help of God to raise the child right. Therefore they must may conscious effort to submit to God’s tenets in raising their children. S stands for sent to preserve humanity. Parenting is a calling to preserve the family and by so doing preserving humanity. The family is said to be the foundation of the society and the peace of society is determined by the peace of the family.
