Mentoring children on Oral Health: Oral-B Takes the Lead

Dear friends and visitors, today is Tuesday and we focus on Social Works Watch™ (SW2), which is our attempt to promote relevant social works, which are critical to the core purposes of this blog.

Join us today as we share with you a recent event spearheaded by Oral-B and culled from http://dailyindependentnig.com. We look forward to your comments.

In line with the celebration of the World Oral Health Day (WOHD), Nigerian children have been advised to take good care of their health particularly the issue of oral well being.

The World Oral Health Day was celebrated on Wednesday, March 20, 2013. As part of activities to commemorate the day, organisations, companies as well as brands that major in oral products organised oral health events for school children across Lagos State where they were enlightened on the importance of good oral care. Consequently, Lagos world record tooth-brushing challenge was also flagged off at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere to mark the day.

While promoting oral health in the country especially among the young generation, Oral-B, a brand of toothpaste, took the campaign to the pupils of Chrisland Primary School, Ikeja.

Speaking at the event, Brand Operations Integration Leader of Procter and Gamble (P&G), Mrs. Mokutima Ajileye said, the company which is a key stakeholder on oral care worldwide invests billions of dollars in research and development annually in order to innovate and produce world class products that meet the needs and budgets of her consumers.

She explained that the eight areas that people usually have problems which need dentists’ check include cavities, gum problems, plaque, sensitivity, enamel erosion, tartar, staining and bad breath.

“Oral-B is committed to providing oral health education to Nigerians not just today on WOHD but always. Oral health is at the core of our brand purpose and this can be seen in the superior protective quality of Oral-B and through the free services we provide with the Oral-B mobile dental clinic program.”

According to her, “At Procter and Gamble our aim is to touch and improve the lives of consumers with all our products. Oral-B furthers this goal by raising awareness about oral hygiene by giving education on the importance on good oral practices and disease prevention. “

Celebrity artist and dentist, Dr Sidney Esiri popularly known as (Sid) encouraged the children to take their oral hygiene seriously, saying, “You have to learn good oral hygiene habits early so that you can protect your teeth.”

At the climax of the programme, the students were taught the proper way to brush their mouths. There were also dental presentations given to the students by members of the Nigerian Dental Association, after which each child received a dental check at the Oral B Mobile Dental Clinic.

We at Taiwo Akinlami INSPIRES stands for developing a complete child. By this we mean a child, who is development spirit, soul and body. We see the program reported above to see a step in that direction. We welcome your comments.

PROTECTION PROTECTION CREED 21: Teaching a Child his/her RIGHTS without RESPONSIBILITIES is preparing the Child for a CRUEL life of LIABILITY

A child has rights. He also has responsibility. As a matter of fact, it is one of his responsibilities, depending on his age to see that his rights are respected.

Participation speaks of the responsibility of the child to be part of the process of respecting his rights. One of the five basic need is that the child’s senses of freedom and responsibilities must be acknowledged and development.

Sections 19 and 20 of the Child’s Rights Act, 2003 make provision for the responsibilities of the Nigerian Child: These sections give expression to the age-long truism that freedom without responsibility is the breeding ground for chaos. The Act therefore outlines certain responsibilities for the Nigerian child as follows:

  • working towards the cohesion of their families
  • respecting their parents and elders
  • placing their physical and intellectual capabilities at the service of the State,
  • contributing to the moral well-being of the society,
  • strengthening social and national solidarity,
  • preserving the independence and integrity of the country,
  • respecting the ideals of freedom, equality, humaneness, and justice for all persons, relating with others in the spirit of tolerance, dialogue and consultation
  • contributing to the best of their abilities solidarity with and unity with Africa, and the world at large.

A child, who does not understand that he has responsibilities towards himself, family, community and the nation will become a liability to all.  It is a rule in child development that a custodian must not do for a child, what by his age and development; he should be in a position to do for himself. We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future,’ says Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Thank you for visiting today. Sure you it was rewarding. I invite you to Think the Child…Think Today…Think the Future. Stay INSPIRED.

Child Protection CREED 20: The child is not a LEADER of TOMORROW; he/she is a LEADER of TODAY. LEADERSHIP is simply RESPONSIBILITY

A child is not a leader of tomorrow. He is a leader of today. The child begins to lead from birth. Leadership simply means the ability to take responsibility.

The child takes the first step in leadership at birth. He cries when he is born to convince you that he agrees to live. Survival Instinct tells him to cry to secure his stay here. He lives by taking responsibility for his survival. From then on he lives a life of responsibility of calling attention to his basic needs.

He cries. He takes the initiative to begin to crawl without prodding. He begins to take steps to walk without persuasion. He moves from crying for his needs to asking and crying for his needs and later to asking for his needs. I think the process of child development is a message from the God that the child is born to be responsible. Responsibility here means leadership.

It has been established that the first step of leadership must be leadership of self. Until you leader yourself, you cannot lead others. The child is blessed with the ability to lead. I guess that is why one of the four baskets of rights of the child is participation. The key to participation is to involve the child in the decision making process in matters that concern him. If the child is to be involved in matters that concern him, we have agreed that he can take responsibility for protecting his own interest and if he can take responsibility for his own interest, it means he can lead.

I tell schools, who say children are leaders of tomorrow that the next time they want to choose class representatives and prefects; they should go for parents, teachers or alumni. My reasoning is that the role of class representatives and prefects are leadership roles, where a child is expected to take responsibility for others; therefore if children are leaders of tomorrow, it will be wicked to saddle him with the responsibilities of leadership before his time. It will amount to asking the child to do what he is not endowed to do by nature.

My point is appointing children as class representatives and prefect is an acceptance of the fact that children are leaders of today.

The child must be made to understand that leadership is not an option in life. He must be taught that the only way to live is to lead. He must also be made to understand that he needs to grow in his leadership capacity. As he grows older, he takes on higher responsibility.

I think this idea that a child is a leader of tomorrow takes leadership far away from our children as a very distant ability to be acquired in the future, when in actual fact without leadership qualities they will never see the future. The idea that children are leaders of tomorrow gives the children a wrong concept about leadership. Unfortunately, the part of the child you do not acknowledge will never be consciously developed. I think that is one of the reasons why the African continent lacks quality leadership today. We fail to prepare our children for leadership and expect them to lead when they arrive at the future.

Thank you for visiting. I urge you this day: Think the Child…Think Today…Think the Future…

Child Protection CREED 19: Do not make the child suffer for what’s important to you but not necessarily important to the child.

We deny our children of many things they need from us, particularly attention as a result of what we consider important to us. In the names of building a career, service to God and humanity and all, we deny the child of the most precious gift we can give him, our presence.

The child and his/her psyche will never understand why we deny them of what is important to them. In fact nothing can compensate for our unavailability to give our children love. Money does not compensate for, neither are gifts. Paying school fees does not pay for it.

The other part of making our children suffer for what’s important to us but not necessarily the child is that we force the child to live our lives. For example there some parents, who will force their 4 year old to fast, when the child doesn’t understand the spiritual implication of same.

Please note that whatever we compelled a child to do, he may not have learned. He has only responded to the obvious pressure. Any time, he is on his own, he goes back to what he knows, which the custodians have not taken time to understand and place a demand for it.

CHILD PROTECTION CREED 18: Respect the Child’s INDIVIDUALITY

There are no two children that are the same. Custodians must be ready to deal with each child as individuals and give them the opportunity to flourish. There must be not attempt to compare children with each other.

A child’s individuality is the mark of his originality and distinctiveness. Custodians must do all to help the child to be conscious of his individuality and defend same.  It means accepting our children for who they are particularly their physical features and peculiar mannerism. Acceptance of our children is to accept them as if they have no fault.

Acceptance of the child will lead the custodians to appreciate the child. It stops the menace of comparison. It simply means custodians will not compare a child to another, siblings or neighbours. Someone said and I verily agree with him, ‘comparison changes the value of a thing.’ Many custodians did not see anything wrong with their children until they met another child, who they believe is better than their children. They begin to compare their children to another child, whom they have met in his glory. When they do this they forget that this child, who they see in his glory has his own time of shame and that their own children have their time of glory.

I must say that there is no basis for comparison. There are 7 billion people in this world going to 7 billion destinations by the plan of the creator.
